Remember, don't conflate "liberals" with hardcore "leftists". The US "founding fathers" were liberals, hardcore leftists are pro socialists and communists like the "Socialist Alternative" party impacting/controlling Seattle and other very blue cities which push for more "identity politics" (a Marxist principle) to help divide and conquer, and call for violence and complete tear down of "the system".  Unfortunately these hardcore leftist groups continue to shift the Democrats more "hard left". Meanwhile the majority of the USA is still center to center-right moderate (see Gallup polls linked at end of this article).

Liberalism generally increases freedom and liberty of individuals and groups.

Leftism (and hardcore rightism) leads to less freedom, larger government controlling more of your lives, targeting of different identity groups as "out groups", etc.

I suspect the distorted numbers and conflicting
"statistics" fueling hardcore leftists (maybe around a little over 20%
of the US population) stumping academecians leadingto such cognitive
dissonance and denial of reality by hard leftists, is due to a perfect
storm of:
* far fewer people are bothering to report the crimes for a range of
reasons,
* demoralization, fear, and frustration of the general public,
* the long wait times to even to get through to report to the police,
* hardcore leftist/marxist anti-police movement,
* understaffed 911 staffing causing long phone wait times just to get a
call through,
* demoralized policepolice unable/unavailable/unwilling to take the
case load anymore,
* California's no-bail laws (set criminals immediately free with no
bail required for release)
* the state and some regions considering many crimes below certain
thresholds as a crime to prosecute so not worth listing,
* which is further heavily distorting the numbers that would have
been reported in the past

This leads the "ivory tower" out of touch living-in-a-bubble academics
to pointing to reported numbers of supposedly lower property
crime rates (and the hard-core leftists and media using to deny
reality) as proof that things are actually better not worse, and that
any claims to the contrary "strain credulity".

Reports claims that criminals are much bolder and more openly brazen
in their attacks, and potentially more organized larger hits.

Hardcore leftists and academics, even seeing the high increase in
violence crime denounce the numbers and claims that police
demoralization as an issue as "“The idea that police demoralization
could have resulted in the kinds of homicide increases we’re talking
about really strains credulity,” says Richard Rosenfeld, a professor of
criminology at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. “If the police are
pulling back, why is it that it only affected the homicide rates? Why
not the property crime rate?” He adds, “There could have been some
impact on homicide. But a 35 percent increase in Los Angeles? Highly
doubtful.”" -- RICHARD ROSENFELD, PROFESSOR OF CRIMINOLOGY

"..officials with the Los Angeles Police Department said they don’t
respond to reports of a train robbery unless Union Pacific asks them
for help, which they said is rare."

"... the People’s City Council of Los Angeles, a social justice
advocacy group, said the media should instead focus on the real
problem—the increasing Los Angeles Police Dept. shootings."
"You mean to say that the ‘retail theft crime wave’ is just propaganda
pushed out by the cops and the California Retailers Association? No
way. ‘Shoplifting’ in Los Angeles down 30%!” tweeted the People’s City
Council in reference to a LA Times article referencing LAPD data on
crime."
"Such statistics show a sharp contrast in narrative from LAPD, with
some of them claiming that Los Angeles is reaching levels similar to
the movie “The Purge.”|"
"However, the People’s City Council alleges that the “rise in crime”
narrative is actually a police ploy to obtain a 12-percent budget
increase.
“LAPD’s copaganda campaign is being exposed. Theft crimes are down in
LA. LAPD killings up 160% & shootings up 50%. They spent months lying
about the ‘rise in crime’ & now they are acting as violent as ever."

"LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A section of the Union Pacific train tracks in
downtown Los Angeles has been littered with thousands of shredded
boxes, packages stolen from cargo containers that stop in the area to
unload."
"...Thieves have been raiding the cargo containers, taking
packages that belong to people from all over the country from retailers
like Amazon, REI and others.

The refuse left behind, like home COVID test kits, are items that the
robbers did not want or did not think were valuable enough to take...."

"...Union Pacific cleaned up this area of tracks three months ago, and
again only about 30 days ago, though the area is already littered with
new discarded boxes."

‘We Can’t Guarantee Your Safety’: Head Of LAPD’s Police Officers’ Union
Warns Tourists Away, but LAPD chief denys issue.

But LAPD Chief, leftists, academics, and some mainstream (legacy)
media, claim crim rates are actually much lower for these types of
crimes.

But other data disproves the defund the police leftists, academics, and
"mainstream" media claims, but still leftists and academics deny.

"...In 1993, a Time cover story asked, “Is Los Angeles going to hell?”
The city was still reeling from the Rodney King riots, still gripped by
gang violence, still mired in the crack epidemic. For the third year in
a row, more than 1,000 men and women would be murdered within the
city’s jagged borders. And so the question wasn’t complete hyperbole."

"And then a funny thing happened: crime started to tick steadily
downward, not only in L.A. but across the nation. Social scientists
struggled to explain the unexpected shift..."
..."as COVID ravaged the globe, crime took another unexpected turn.
Property crime fell; there were fewer burglaries and larcenies. And
there were fewer reported rapes. But in most cities, including Los
Angeles, violent crime went up. There were more than 350 murders in
L.A. last year, a 38 percent increase from 2019...."

"...LAPD reports that in the first 24 weeks of 2021, reports of shots
fired were up 48 percent. The number of people wounded by gun violence
was up 50 percent. And homicides were up 26 percent. Los Angeles is on
track to record 437 murders this year, the most since 2006....."

"...“It’s a puzzle,” says David Abrams, a University of Pennsylvania
law professor who runs the City Crime Stats website. “I think a lot of
people are trying to understand it. I haven’t seen anything compelling
that fully nails it.”"..."

...in May, George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police officer
Derek Chauvin, triggering protests across the country. And for reasons
that are now the subject of some debate, Floyd’s death marked an
inflection point; in its aftermath, killings surged in most American
cities. The murder rate in Milwaukee nearly doubled. Washington, D.C.
saw a 64 percent increase in homicides. Murders in Philadelphia hit a
30-year high.

When he looked at the L.A. data, the first thing Vernon noticed was
that the spike wasn’t evenly distributed across the city. Shootings
were rising in the same places that already had disproportionately high
numbers—south of the 10 freeway, east of the L.A. River. Most of the
increase in gun crime was due to shootings with multiple victims.
Vernon also noticed a prevalence of “walk-up” shootings. “If you’re
going to walk up to someone and shoot them,” he says, “you’re going to
be more successful at hitting your target, and you’re going to be more
lethal.”

Why the sudden rise in gun violence? Vernon’s theory is one promulgated
by a number of U.S. police departments: decreased police presence in
high-crime areas. Some of this was by design. In October 2019, the LAPD
announced that its Metropolitan Division, a group of 200 officers,
would stop pulling over random drivers after a Los Angeles Times
investigation found that traffic stops were disproportionately
targeting Black drivers. And, indeed, traffic stops were down 27
percent in 2020.

But Vernon says the decrease in police presence was also due to
another, more organic reason. “If you’re going to call the police
‘racist,’ if you’re going to call for the defunding of the police and
stigmatize the police, there’s gonna be a natural pullback from the
police,” he says. “Police are not going to be as proactive in making
stops—in initiating activity—if they believe the result of that is
going to be them getting fired or being called a racist.”

The upshot, according to cops like Vernon, is that criminals feel
emboldened, more comfortable carrying a gun, maybe even more
comfortable using one.

Needless to say, Vernon’s view is controversial, disputed by activists
who argue the rise in homicides has more to do with economic conditions
than lack of police presence.

“The idea that police demoralization could have resulted in the kinds
of homicide increases we’re talking about really strains credulity,”
says Richard Rosenfeld, a professor of criminology at the University of
Missouri–St. Louis. “If the police are pulling back, why is it that it
only affected the homicide rates? Why not the property crime rate?” He
adds, “There could have been some impact on homicide. But a 35 percent
increase in Los Angeles? Highly doubtful.”....

.."While overall city crime rates remain far below records set during
the notorious gang wars of the 1990s, violent crime has jumped sharply
in L.A., as it has in other cities. Much of the violence has occurred
in poor communities and among vulnerable populations, such as the
homeless, and receives little attention.

However, since the start of the pandemic and more rapidly in recent
months, crime has crept up in wealthier enclaves and thrust its way to
the center of public discourse in L.A. — against a backdrop of COVID-19
angst, evolving political perceptions of what role police and
prosecutors should play in society and, now, a holiday season upon
which brick-and-mortar retailers are relying to stay afloat.

Some wonder if this could be a turning point for California, which for
decades has been at the center of the movement for criminal justice
reform, rolling back tough sentencing laws and reducing prison
populations.

Polls in 2020 showed that California voters largely support many of
these measures, and both San Francisco and Los Angeles have elected
district attorneys with strong reform agendas. However, those concerned
about crime and those who believe liberal policies have contributed to
its rise have grown more vocal...."

leftists deny they cause violence, indicating rightist kill far more
people (but ignores all the non-fatal crimes, looting, beatings, etc.),
which seems to indicate the rightists are more (unfortunately)
effective at killing successfully than the leftists, but that leftists
are still causing far more overall damage/harm to far more locations,
people, businesses, than the hardcore rightists.

200 robberies reported in last week alone, LAPD Chief Michel Moore says
https://abc7.com/lapd-chief-michel-moore-crime-in-los-angeles-smash-and-grab-robberies/11312810/
"..."Right now, I believe that the efforts of the last year and a half
or so created at least a perception of a more permissive environment,"
said Moore. "For people that have the ability to go out and engage in
this type of conduct we are talking about here with no consequence."

Zero-bail policies mean, in some instances, suspects are quickly
released from custody after they're arrested and booked for the crimes.
The current zero-bail policy was designed to reduce jail populations
during the pandemic.

"Two years ago, a person arrested would be in custody and set to be
arraigned in 72 hours," said Moore. "Today, that process is, with the
zero-bail, that person is in and out back in the community and their
next court appearance is an arraignment that's four or five months out."

Moore said homicides have gone up about 50% since 2019 and aggravated
assaults have gone up about 16%."
