Techie stats.

Since I have a brief moment while two servers are compiling, laptop and handhelds resolved for now, and a remote client is unavailable for me to work on, I have a few moments to put some of the "Techie" stats of all the computers and such from the past weeks.
The devices are:

  • Laptop - Toshiba - Satellite M45-S355

  • Handheld - Sharp - Zaurus SL-C3100

  • My new desktop multimedia system - Custom Built tower

  • William's new desktop system

  • Brennan's upgraded system

  • Drake's upgraded system

  • Click the "Read more" link for all the specifications...

My Toshiba I bought through Best Buy with extended 3 year warranty and more. It's nowhere near as nice as my Vaio pcg-grt170 was (See earlier articles for details), but this laptop has better battery life and is a good "middle of the road" system whereas the Vaio was a portable desktop workhorse. Here's some of the Toshiba specs:

    • Intel Pentium® M processor 750 [1.86GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 533MHz FSB]
    • Microsoft® Windows XP Home Edition (SP2)
    • I added Suse 9.3 as well (use that about 95% of the time)
    • 1024MB PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM (512MBx2)
    • 15.4" Diagonal Wide-screen XGA Display w/TruBrite Technology
    • Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator w/10MB-128MB shared video memory
    • 100GB HDD (5400rpm)
    • DVD SuperMulti drive (Double Layer)
    • 5-in-1 Bridge Media Adapter
    • 3-USB (2.0) ports
    • i.LINK™ IEEE 1394 port
    • TV-out(S-Video)
    • Headphone jack
    • External microphone jack (monoaural)
    • RGB monitor port
    • V.92/56K modem port (Intel/Toshiba America Info 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC97)(WinModem)
    • 10/100 Ethernet port (Marvell Technology Group Ltd.) Yukon 88E8036
    • Intel® Pro/Wireless LAN 2200BG (802.11b/g)
It took some serious compiling and downloads to get this to work under Suse 9.3, but it works fine now Here's the links related to getting the wifi to work under Linux:
  • The modem also took some doing to get working since it's a "winmodem" type. One thing to note, most of the sites kept referring to smlink (www.smlink.com) but they apparently had their website hacked or crashed during the days I was trying to work this out, so I found a way around having to use their drivers, but supposedly they make it easier if you use their drivers. I'm just listing the information I used not using their website. You may have an easier time now that their site is back up. Assuming they don't get it hacked again since they appear to be foolishly using a windows based server (asp page). Below are the links related to getting it working under Linux:
  • The most useful site for winmodems under linux: linmodems.org: http://www.linmodems.org/
  • You'll need the scanModem script to correctly identify the chipset: http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz
