Have you had enough? Switching away from Windows?

Have you had enough yet?

I've posted a poll/survey curious to see how many have made the switch from Windows to something else, or are even thinking of making the switch.

There has been a recent flurry of people I know personally and professionally, away from Windows...

I have been using Linux in various incarnations since 1994, and OpeBSD since the very late 90's.

I know I've helped several people just this week alone, in multiple states (Washington, California, Minnesota, Idaho, & California) switch because of the latest update to XP harassing people for SUPPOSEDLY having "been victims of software piracy", even though they have perfectly legitimate versions, including versions shipped with their manufacturer's computer (Dell, Toshiba, etc.) of the software, the update is mistakenly harassing them. So I've rolled back registries and disabled updates for them to get many by in the short run, but of course that makes them HUGELY vulnerable without the regular fixes that running any Microsoft products requires.

I've also been cleaning up messes caused by spyware, network based worms and email viruses (mostly the former) that have infested their comptuers. Most because some other person (friends, family, kids, workers, etc.) have used their computer just once improperly, and now their computers are completely a mess. Many are fed up and are now willing to switch to Linux rather than deal with all the poor quality, and hassles of trying to keep Microsoft windows and related products running.

So many are finally now listening to my years of advice to get off Windoze ASAP.

Most are switching to Linux, and most of those to Suse 10.1 since it's so non-techie user friendly compared to other distributions. Though it is quite a bit bloated and slow compared to other distros such as Gentoo (one of my favorites personally from a techie perspective). Some of the more technical ones are using Gentoo and Kubuntu / Ubuntu.

Some are switching (in some cases back to) OS X. But I've disuaded some from that course because of Mac's higher costs and the closed source mentality of some aspects, and lacking the hardware advantage that Mac once had.

A very few are switching to various BSD versions such as FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, etc.
I've been using OpenBSD for years on single processor servers and "security' oriented laptops due to it's incredible security level. I use that and/or knoppix-std. ;-)

So, please take a few seconds and vote what you're doing.
Cheers!
