Blog Entry Reminder. Timelines on this blog are all mixed up. by Hawke — last modified Mar 12, 2009 05:42 PM
I originally ran my blog on a totally different web platform, and I did not bother trying to write scripts to export from the old system, and import into the new system (it's my bloody personal blog, it's really not important enough to me or anyone else to both I think).
Blog Entry February 2002 ride from California to Idaho, brrrrrrrr. by Hawke — last modified Mar 12, 2009 05:43 PM
For various reasons, I had to move from the Bay Area in California to Idaho in the middle of winter. My bike certainly wouldn't qualify as an "adventure" bike normally, but I put it through an adventure anyway.

Blog Entry SuSE 9.0 on Vaio grt170 by Hawke — last modified Mar 12, 2009 05:47 PM
After spending many hours struggling to upgrade SuSE 8.2 to 9.0 on the Sony Vaio grt170, I gave up trying to upgrade, and did a clean install. I still had the XP Home [gack] that came with it, since, as usual, neither CompUSA nor MS, nor Sony will honor the MS EULA and give me my money back for not using the product (XP). So I used it as a reference point for driver issues and such, however that's about all the use that parition gets, and once I'm sure everything is working properly, it will be wipde to free up space for more Linux apps on this massive hard drive. So, fresh install, see the [read more] link below for the details so far...
News Item Huge Supernova Baffles Scientists by Hawke — last modified Mar 27, 2009 12:58 PM
Scientists from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and San Diego State University have observed an explosion of a star 50 times larger than the sun. In what they call a "first observation of its kind" the scientists were able to notice that most of the star’s mass collapsed in on itself, resulting in a creation of a large black hole. While exploding stars, or "supernovae," have been previously detected using advanced research satellites, this recent explosion is the largest exploding star observed so far. The phenomenon strengthens a theory that according to which stars ranging from tens to hundreds of times the mass of our sun all end their lifetime as black holes.

I didn't intend it, but this Summer ended up far too busy for the kids (and I).
Blog Entry Role playing gaming by Hawke — last modified Aug 07, 2009 09:11 PM
I have been role playing gaming (paper and dice type) since 1979 or so. I have played and gm'd/dm'd most gaming systems in a lot of genres, but prefer fantasy/Tolkien settings the most for long term campaigns, but will play just about anything if it's a decent group. I'm detailing my background in the [read more] section of this article in case you're interested. I'm planning to move to Spokane in 1-3 months and am hoping to either join or create a new gaming group for gaming in Middle-earth using "whatever" system. Click [read more] for details...

I've occasionally been teased about how long my email signature is for some of my email addresses. But, they're excerpts of some of my favorite quotes (though certainly not all of them). I thought I'd post these here, maybe some others will find them as meaningful as I do. ;-) Also, you'll see my Instant Messaging contact information as well (hopefully it doesn't trigger a rash of IM spammers). ;-)

Blog Entry The Haunted House by Hawke — last modified Aug 08, 2009 09:58 AM
Due to (not quite so) popular request. I finally opted to write down the experience I had with a haunted house my wife and lived in (rented) when we were first married....
Blog Entry The Final Tour (lyrics) by Hawke — last modified Aug 08, 2009 09:59 AM
I wrote this when I was living in Villa Franche around Summer 1993. I had a lot of fun with "Special effects" When recording it, for example, the "boiling mud" was me holding a microphone over my mouth as I "gurgled" slowly some pepsi, and other such "Analog" special effects. The recording is less than perfect on the then new Yamaha M2HB 4 track (with 6 input) recorder, but it was fun anyway, though darkly humorous.
Blog Entry Streetwalkin' (lyrics) by Hawke — last modified Aug 08, 2009 10:03 AM
This was an amalgamation of thoughts, ideas, experiences, images, and people based on my multiple times of having to live on the streets and other generally homeless periods of my life. I really like this song, both the lyrics and the music for it, but my voice just can't do it the justice of what I hear in my head, and I hope some day I can find someone who can, who would be willing to sing and record it for me some day. I think I wrote it around '94-'95 ish.
Blog Entry The whole power, transportation, and environment debate by Hawke — last modified Aug 08, 2009 10:05 AM
My eldest entered into a rather heated debate this morning with the nanny. He was mostly just "parroting" what he's hear me say, so his arguments were not well founded and backed up with examples. She brought up a number of good (though stereo typical) points that he was unable to counter. For any examples I gave she wanted to see actual "proof". I've come across articles in many places "proving" my stance on the best energy, transportation, environmental, and even water solution is Nuclear power with electric cars, but I have failed to make note of most of them relying on my (admittedly spotty) memory to bring up the examples when this more and more frequently debated topic comes up. So I have setup this page to start quickly jotting down the links I find (or other notes) on each topic. All of the ones I'm writing down today, are ones I have heard/read in recent years, I just need to dig them back up from my bookmarks and such. I have to focus on other priorities right now, but by setting up this page, I can very quickly add them in the future until this is fully updated. I hope others find this enlightening and helpful as well.
Blog Entry Zaurus pics. by Hawke — last modified Aug 08, 2009 10:06 AM
I don't have time to go into details, you can read about this WONDERFUL! Sharp Zaurus SL-c3100. When I get some time, I'll come back to this posting and add descriptions to the photos. Warning, the Zaurus SL-c3100 not for someone wanting just a PDA with "toys", this is a true handheld workhorse! This blows away just about any handheld out there. I had to pay to have it imported to the USA, you can only get it in Japan. For some reason, clamshells (with decent keyboards), just aren't popular in the USA, just everywhere else in the world. We're really falling further and further behind in the world with technology (wireless, media, handhelds, embedded tech, biotech, etc.). :-( Anyhow, it's running Linux, which, since I was always trying to get Linux to run on every handheld I've had (Jornada 680,690,720, NEC Mobilepro, Palm's, etc.) , it's nice to actually have what I prefer (and it's rock stable, much better than Palm OS or CE/PocketPC in recent years have been) or you can put other OSes such as BSD variants and other Linux distros on it. Click the READ MORE link for the many pics, and details... It's basically able to do what a laptop can do, but miniaturized (click on thumbnails for larger view)...
Blog Entry My 2nd Prius - 2008 - a Lemon by Hawke — last modified Aug 08, 2009 10:35 PM

Blog Entry Workaround for Suse 10.0 on Toshiba m45 s355 by Hawke — last modified Aug 08, 2009 10:49 PM
In earlier articles I posted the pros and cons of Suse 10.0 on this newer Toshiba Satellite Laptop M45-S355. One of the only real gotchas (besides the memory leaks of some apps), is that the wireless and ethernet wouldn't work at the same time if acpi is enabled. Apparently it's an issue with Toshiba's buggy ACPI chipset in this (and some other) model of laptop. :-( That combined with certain NIC/Wifi Drivers included in the kernel distributed with Suse 10.0 (and many other distros) kernel version 2.6.13-15.7-default. I was getting by with acpi=off in the kernel load line in grub menu.1st, but of course that disabled all power management. At the time I couldn't find any other information to help out. Now I've found Novell's buglist has this listed for this specific model laptop, and someone found a work around there, but they went with a whole recompile anyway. There are several options to resolve this issue now.

Blog Entry Where I stand on each issue. by Hawke — last modified Aug 08, 2009 10:52 PM
I'm going to just make short bullet-listings of where I stand on each issue. Later I may explain why I stand there, if I can find the time, but this will help at least in my process of trying to figure out which presidential candidate for pencil in (if necessary) for November 5th, 2008 election.

Blog Entry What am I up to most recently these days? by Hawke — last modified Aug 08, 2009 10:56 PM
I kind of have so much going on over the macro scale, that the day to day micro scale gets totally buried sometimes. I posted earlier more of a macro overview, now, I'll get down to what's more immediately going on for me, for those who've been asking (mostly via email).

Blog Entry Vocal Jury Performance, Winter '06 by Hawke — last modified Aug 13, 2009 08:13 PM
I had to sing in front of several instructors, and the Director of the Music Program at EWU. I was very nervous, and it was very stressful leading up to the event. I had unfortunately missed a number of voice lessons over the quarter, and was ill prepared on one song in particular, but of course all areas were impacted by missing such sessions. The accompanist I was going to use ended up not being available, and I didn't realize that until only two weeks before this performance. So, I was scrambling.
Blog Entry Virtual Reality for the Disabled - Creative Recreation Program Ideas and Trends by Hawke — last modified Aug 13, 2009 08:20 PM
Goal Use Virtual Reality technologies to help those with various disabilities (except blindness) to engage, in a 'virtual' way in activities that would normally be very difficult, if not impossible for them in the 'real' world.
Blog Entry GRUB & LVM MBR recovery notes by Hawke — last modified Aug 18, 2009 09:45 PM
This is mostly just as a quick reminder to myself, since this has come up twice in the past month while I've been testing out Windows 7 RC and Windows 7 RTM. At least on my (complex) multi-boot laptop setup with LVM, I keep forgetting some of the steps, and thought putting them all in one place, might help others too. They aren't very explanatory, so not for newbies, but hopefully helpful to some.

Blog Entry Thoughts in response to Khanada's Being Buddhalicious by Hawke — last modified Aug 19, 2009 11:12 PM
Khanada recently posted in her article "Being Buddahlicious", about her and her sister Annette's frustrations with the rat race of this industrialized hyper world, and her desire to "get away" from the chaos, but instead, finding the inner peace and awareness to cope with it, and just "BE" wherever she is, after reading "The Bhagavad Gita" and some of "The Buddha's" teachings. So, reading that of course triggered a whole slew of thoughts from me, and I thought I'd post them here.

Blog Entry Roasting chestnuts on an open fire... (motorcycle on fire!) by Hawke — last modified Sep 10, 2009 08:51 AM
This may fit under the "life stories" category better than the motorcycle section, but since I've not been doing any adventuring on the bike in a long time, and this was a "mis-adventure", I figured I put it in the Motorcycles section. The short version is: My sport bag, with many possessions, slipped onto the exhaust of my motorcycle, while I was on the freeway, and caught fire. A portion of the motorcycle is ruined/melted/burned, and just about everything in the bag was scattered over a 1.3 mile area. To read the long version, click the "Read More" link at the end of this article for all the gory details of my stupid actions exacerbated by more stupid actions. At least I wasn't hurt, and no one else was hurt. At least, that's what I keep trying to tell my self. ;-)
